WSC Freestyle Sprint Recap: North Americans

This is just a quick update with some graphs of the North American’s heat times (data provided via Jan at I’ll have my usual sprint race recap up tomorrow. Obviously, it was a pretty disappointing day for the North Americans, since Kikkan Randall had some big expectations behind her. But sprint racing is risky, so that’s the breaks. Here are the heat times for the North American men:

And for the North American women:

I’m really sorry for Kikkan. I expected and hoped for an american gold yesterday since it would be so valuable for the skiing sport in USA. She made a really good impression in an interview in swedish tv, disappointed of course but still happy and smiling. Seems to be a great person!

No kidding! I’m particularly bummed because of the progress Kikkan has made in her distance skiing as well; obviously, not at the level of her sprinting, but I had hopes that with a strong sprint result (a medal, at least) she’d be able to build on that for some strong distance results later in the events. I’m worried now that even if she has a really good distance race (top 15, say), it won’t get the attention it deserves in the US.

Joran, I wonder if you could do a graph comparing the difficulty of qualifying for a WC and WSC heats. I think it would be quite interesting if you could do it, because in my opinion it is much harder to qualify in a regular WC than WSC, purely basing it off the number of skiers the strong countries can have.

I completely agree; I’m not sure off the top of my head how I might express that in a graph, per se, but I can definitely count up the number of athletes various other nations have qualified for the heats in WCs that didn’t participate in the WSC sprint race. I’ll put that in the queue.
